Primo Levi (1919-1987) was an Italian chemist and writer, best known for
his memoirs If This Is a Man and The Periodic Table. Ann Goldstein, the editor of The Complete Works of Primo Levi
and the award-winning translator of Elena Ferrante's novels, is a former
editor at The New Yorker. Alessandra Bastagli is the translator of Primo Levi's stories in A Tranquil Star and his essays in The Complete Works. She lives in New York.
A chemist by training, the author became one of the witnesses to twentieth-century atrocity. In these haunting reflections inspired by the elements of the periodic table, he ranges from young love to political savagery; from the inert gas argon - and 'inert' relatives like the uncle who stayed in bed for twenty-two years - to life-giving carbon.
An extraordinary kind of autobiography in which each of the 21 chapters takes its title and its starting-point from one of the elements in the periodic table.
Survival in Auschwitz: If This Is a Man is a book written by the Italian author, Primo Levi. It describes his experiences in the concentration camp at Auschwitz during the Second World War.

The Complete Works of Primo Levi, which includes seminal works like If This Is a Man and The Periodic Table, finally gathers all fourteen of Levi's books-memoirs, essays, poetry, commentary, and fiction-into three slipcased volumes.
Provides a report on living conditions in the concentration camp for Russian authorities. Representing the attempts at fathoming the horrors, this work details the deportation to Auschwitz, selections for work and extermination, everyday life in the camp, and the organization and operation of the gas chambers.
One of Italy's leading men of letters, a chemist by profession, writes about incidents in his life in which one or another of the elements figured in such a way as to become a personal preoccupation
