Father John controls everything inside The Fence. And Father John likes rules. Especially about never talking to Outsiders. Because Father John knows the truth. He knows what is right, and what is wrong. He knows what is coming. But Moonbeam is starting to see the lies behind Father John's words. She wants him to be found out. What if the only way out of the darkness is to light a fire?
With a story about a totalitarian cult, you might expect that to be the focus in terms of story - our protagonist surviving it and her being freed from it being the climax. In a way it still is, but the focus is more on the aftermath, what normally might be shoved into the epilogue, and how the characters are coping with their traumatic experiences. A brilliant move on Will Hill’s part was to make all the survivors (that we see) children of varying ages. We see what scars these children have growing up in such an environment, how it has shaped them and the fear that maybe they’ll never be able to adapt to the world beyond. However, most of the interactions are between our protagonist Moonbeam, the doctor and Agent Carlyle and all three bounce really well off each other.
It’s just a great read. I can’t really find fault with it.
Will Hill is an award-winning author whose most recent novel, After the Fire, won the YA Book Prize 2018 and has been shortlisted for several other awards including the Carnegie Medal, as well as being selected for the 2017 Zoella & Friends Book Club. His first novel, Department 19 - the first in a series of five - was published in 2011 to widespread acclaim, garnering Will, and the series, a huge fan base. Will now lives in east London with his girlfriend.
