The Phoenix Force, the cosmic power that possessed and ultimately killed Jean Grey, is returning to Earth. Scott Summers and his team of X-Men believe that it will help rekindle mutantkind, reversing the effects of the actions of the Scarlet Witch, whereas the Captain America-led Avengers think that it is likely to destroy the Earth instead. Caught in the middle of this argument is Hope Summers, a teenage mutant from the future, the girl that everyone believes will be the Phoenix's next host. The Avengers want to take Hope in, in the attempt to keep the Phoenix Force from inhabiting her, the X-Men want Hope to embrace the cosmic power when it arrives. But nobody wants to ask Hope what she wants to do.
This disagreement soon turns to all out war, and whilst the war is about group opinion, some of the individual battles become very personal. T'Challa, King of Wakanda, fights his wife Ororo Monroe, Scarlet Witch and Quiksilver face off with their father Magneto, and the Wolverine battles those he once considered family, as he sides with the Avengers, rather than his own kind. But in the end, will the fighting make a difference when the Phoenix arrives? And how much will be destroyed before the warring factions see sense?
Both the art and the story here are excellent, and the sublime extended cast is ablaze with huge names from across the Marvel Universe.
