J.K. Rowling's Birthday
July 31st is famous for being the birthday of everyone’s favourite boy wizard, Harry Potter. But today is also the birthday of his creator J.K. Rowling. She is known the world over for creating Harry’s wizarding world, which has spawned one of the biggest franchises the book industry has ever seen. To celebrate Rowling’s birthday, however, we’ve been exploring some of the other books she has written, which often get lost in Potter’s shadow.
As Rowling’s first non-Potter book, this book was a hugely hot topic when it first came out in 2012. Set in the suburban West Country town of Pagford, this story follows the election for a council position following the death of Parish Councillor Barry Fairbrother. Fairbrother had supported an alliance with a local council estate, but several of the candidates seeking to replace him wish to dissociate with the estate. Those running for his position soon find their darkest secrets revealed online and their election campaigns ruined.
The Cormoran Strike series
Writing as Robert Galbraith, Rowling branched out into crime fiction in 2013 with The Cuckoo’s Calling. Cormoran Strike, the protagonist of the series, is a private investigator and illegitimate son of a famous rock star. In this first novel, he investigates the apparent suicide of a troubled model. The series has been very successful, with a television adaptation and the fourth title announced earlier this year: Lethal White.
In 2008 Rowling was invited to give a commencement speech at Harvard University. Her moving speech gives important advice for young people at a turning point in their lives. Drawing on her own experiences, she discusses some of the most important issues in life with a great deal of emotional force.
