Roald Dahl Named One of UK’s Most Popular Authors: How the Nation Feels About Roald Dahl
When many of us think of our childhood literary heroes Roald Dahl instantly comes to mind, a combination of fascinating characters and stories brought to life through Quentin Blake’s illustrations have proved a winning formula for the author making him a firm favourite on many UK bookshelves.
At Wordery we recently conducted a survey to find out the UK’s favourite authors and books, and it uncovered the UK’s love for childhood book hero Roald Dahl. With one in 10 brits citing Roald Dahl as one of their favourite authors of all time in the survey (12/3%), we took a further look to see where in the UK loves Roald Dahl the most and which book came out on top.
Bristol is the city which loves Roald Dahl the most in the UK, with 20.3% of respondents choosing Roald Dahl as their favourite author. With Plymouth (16.3%) and Norwich (16.3%) taking up the top remaining spots in the top three. The South West is the region that cited Roald Dahl as their favourite with 20.3% of respondents selecting him as their author of choice.
We also discovered that more women prefer Roald Dahl than men; with 15.9% of women choosing Dahl as one of their favourite authors compared to 7.9% of men, and that the author is the most popular with those aged between 16-24 (21.3%).
Matilda comes out on top as the UK’s favourite Roald Dahl book according to Google annual search volumes, receiving almost 35,000 searches annually. The Witches comes in second place, with Revolting Rhymes in third. When it comes to the rest of the world, they agree with the UK that Matilda is Roald Dahl’s best book as it was the most searched for book by the author around the world, meanwhile in the USA The Witches came out on top.
