Stephen King's The Dark Tower

August 18, 2017

Stephen King's The Dark Tower

The film adaptation of the first book in Stephen King’s bestselling fantasy novel series, The Dark Tower, is out today! But what is it all about?

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."

The Dark Tower series is the story of Roland Deschain, a gunslinger who travels across the post-apocalyptic landscape of Mid-World in search of the nominal Dark Tower. The Dark Tower is a magical structure that lies at the centre of the space-time continuum, and it is being threatened by an unknown force, which seeks to use the power of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.

While the world is literally falling apart around him, things go from bad to worse. The Beams which keep space, time, size, and dimension aligned are weakening, causing The Dark Tower itself to founder. Roland must find a way to stabilise the Tower and save the Beams, or else reality will be destroyed entirely.

There are 7 instalments in the Dark Tower series, plus a revised edition of the first volume. King also wrote a prequel to the first book, titled The Little Sisters of Eluria. In 2012 he published a new novel set in the Dark Tower universe which takes place between books 4 and 5, titled The Wind Through the Keyhole.

Primarily inspired by Robert Browning’s poem ‘Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came’, King’s series is a sweeping epic, and considered by many to be the greatest work in his extensive bibliography.
