The perfect book for your star sign this Summer

The perfect book for your star sign this Summer

We all seem pay a bit extra attention to what’s on our reading list in summer, perhaps because that book is going to accompany us somewhere special, so we want it to fit into our mood. The following choices are handpicked for your star sign, so they’re sure to STIR you up (I’m not promising that they’re all fluffy and nice though…)

ARIES- My absolute darling by Gabriel Tallent
You’re a brave, daring character Aries and it takes a lot to make you shudder… but this book might just do that. At 14, Turtle Alveston knows the use of every gun on her wall. She knows how to snare a rabbit, sharpen a blade and splint a bone (she's a kinda' Aries gal herself). She knows that her daddy loves her more than anything else in this world and he'll do whatever it takes to keep her with him (mmm... that sounds like a “red flag” doesn’t it). Sometimes the people you're supposed to trust are the ones who do most harm (true dat). Brace yourself for a dark, scary ride…

TAURUS- Admissions by Henry Marsh
The human body and our physical existence quite fascinates you, and you’re not squeamish about blood, brains and matters of life and death. Neither is Mr Marsh, a world-renowned neuro surgeon who, as his career draws to an end, recounts the best and worst moments of his working life in the operating theatre. These compelling, searingly honest accounts of heartbreak and triumph will have you engrossed.

GEMINI- The secret by Rhonda Byrne
This is one of those (dreaded) *self help* books that everyone went nuts about a while back… and yet this one has persisted in popularity because (honestly) it kinda’ works. Basically, this book will teach you how to attract what you most desire into your life. It breaks down how you use the law of attraction in your everyday life, with real results. You believe in magic, because you ARE a bit magic Gemini.

CANCER- Freedom from our addictions by Russell Brand
I’m not saying you’re an *addict*, but Russell outlines the ways we ALL have some behaviours or mindsets which have become addictive, and harmful, to us. Cancerians are intense, emotive people and if you could give yourself a break from some of your more extreme moods and self-limiting thoughts, wouldn’t that be cool? Yes, it would. See this book as a little, private therapy sesh.

LEO- He said/she said by Erin Kelly
A creepy little whodunnit, which will keep you guessing. A couple witness a horrific act. Did they really see what they said they did? Is someone lying? Who’s the crazy one here? Leo, you love “high drama” and this fits the bill for a summer blockbuster. Just add sangria, a sunbed and sunshine and you’re literally in Leo heaven!

VIRGO- Somebody I used to know by Wendy Mitchell
Of all the signs, you’re one of the most empathetic, keen-to-help and interested in real life heroism and challenges. This moving autobiography will become something you remember forever. Wendy has dementia and is trying to come to terms with her diagnosis and how on earth she can live her life, as it starts to slip away. Her story (which IS ongoing; she’s still blogging as I write) is inspiring, practical and fear-busting. A must-read!

LIBRA- The chalk man by CJ Tudor
A mutilated body. A group of friends who don’t talk about their past. Ugly secrets in a small town. It’s all there for your mighty Libran intellect to try and second guess what’s really gone off. The story flips from the past to the present, and an unsettling atmosphere descends. You won’t get the twist, it’ll hit you SMACK in the face. And there’s more than one turn in the tale- the last one arrives on the VERY last page... (I know, now, you’ll make it your summer’s priority to pre-empt these twists!).

SCORPIO- With the end in mind by Dr Kathryn Mannix
Death. It’s a topic which fascinates most Scorpios, and this book looks it right in the eye and stares it down. Dr. Kathryn Mannix shares moving stories from a lifetime of caring for the dying, offering her own insights, reassurances and perspective on the process of dying through the real stories of her patients. An absolutely compelling eye-opener; you won’t be the same after reading it.

SAGITTARIUS- The circle by Dave Eggers
You do like to think deeply about this planet, our species, and where we’re taking things… and this book provides an utterly chilling dystopian viewpoint. We follow Mae who joins a global internet giant as a bright young thing, and quickly rises through the ranks… before she starts to learn what their end game really is, and what’s REALLY going on. Shudderingly feasible…

CAPRICORN- If I could tell you just one thing by Richard Reed
Heroism appeals to all Capricorns, you have an innate respect for those who’ve “made it”. And this book captures the wisdom of all manner of modern-day heroes. Each person distils the one thing they feel they need to pass on to others, as a valuable life lesson and piece of guidance. Richard Reed is the founder of Innocent drinks and credits his success to four pieces of valuable advice he got at just the right time. He now asks everyone he admires for advice, and this is his collection.

AQUARIUS- Strange weather by Joe Hill
Joe Hill is the son of Stephen King and, dare I say it, nowadays maybe even a better storyteller than his dad. Part fantasy / horror / sci fi / thriller, his stories take everyday people into bizarre, other-worldly situations and this collection is his latest selection of page-turners. You’re a little bit “out there”, Aquarius, and these stories will seem like the kind of thing you could seriously imagine (though not desire) happening to you!

PISCES- The mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar
No other star sign has the affinity with water that Pisces is blessed by, and this seafaring tale of a man who acquires a real-life mermaid in the late 1700’s will captivate your watery imagination. Beautifully written, with an eerie undertone, you will be swept into the world of dark desires and thwarted dreams inhabited by these damaged characters. Let yourself be swept out to sea…
