Wide ranging, authoritative and fun: perfect for journey planning
What a great read! Had this book for Christmas and these past days I've been led by the authors through the Carpathian Mountains, down the Rhône Valley, through small towns in Bavaria and down the coast of southern Italy to Sicily. We do plan to follow many of the book's routes 'for real' of course, but even before booking any tickets Europe by Rail has already inspired and instructed in equal measure. With its wide ranging references to art, literature and wider cultural issues, Europe by Rail really has been an education. I have discovered that there's a Slavic speaking minority in eastern Germany (the Sorbs), that the Arctic Circle moves over time (not quite randomly), and that Lucy Stewart in Émile Zola's novel Nana had "une tête de cheval, mais adorable."
