To me, the best way to sum up this book, is to use the author's words - this book is not about how to be happy; it's about how to reframe and work through all the stuff that gets in the way of being happy. It talks about the difficult stuff that we don't want to talk about, but working through even a small bit of that stuff frees up a whole lot of energy for the good stuff. Unlike a lot of books of this nature, this is written by a researcher and uses case studies and evidence to back up the author's findings and claims. It is the second book I have read by this author, the first being 'I thought it was just me..' - I found is a logical progression from that first book, as this book does cover a bit of the same material, but just very summarised - I wouldn't have gotten as much from the section on 'shame awareness' had I not read that book first. I am normally the type that likes to speed read through books and just get to the point of things and then carry on. However with this book, I found myself reading it one chapter at a time, and reflecting on each section. I didn't go so far as to sort out my own notebook with notes, however IMHO, just even reflecting on each section is likely to bring about epiphanies for even the most skeptical reader. I highly recommend giving this book a try.
