My Pre-Cursed Child Story:
The minute I read about the EIGHTH HARRY POTTER book on Facebook, I called my best friends and went “DID YOU SEE IT? DID YOU SEE IT?”
Even though I was only eight when the Deathly Hallows were released, I still remember that day more clearly than anything in the world. My sister woke up at three a.m. to go stand outside our local bookstore at 4 a.m. along with lines and lines of other people to get their pre-ordered copies. My father made my sister read the book in a couple of hours, and then stayed up all night reading The Deathly Hallows, despite my mother throwing him out of the room.
For the longest time, I’ve WANTED A SERIES THAT I LOVED SO MUCH, that I would be out of bed at three a.m. and was willing to wait for hours and hours in a line.
And when I read about Cursed Child, ALL MY DREAMS HAD BEEN ANSWERED.
I pre-ordered my copy the DAY the link went live on Amazon (HEY. It was cheaper, and I’m a #brokebookworm OKAY?) and waited (not so) patiently for July 31st (aka THE BEST DAY EVER) to come.
Unfortunately Amazon would only be delivering the book on Wednesday and as I prepared myself for the wait my parents said: “Aditi, let’s go to the land of all happiness (the bookstore)” and I jumped up in glee.
My Plan included going there and “reading just a few pages” but OF COURSE, that didn’t work out and now, I ended up using my gift cards and buying it anyway!
I planned to read ONLY THIRTY PAGES A DAY, just so that I could properly savour the last Harry Potter, but…
The ACTUAL REVIEW:
THE BEGINNING WAS BEAUTIFUL, OKAY?
This book starts off, in script form, EXACTLY where Deathly Hallows left off ALL THOSE YEARS AGO and Oh God, the FEELS. The first few pages switch rapidly through Albus’s first few years at Hogwarts, showing us the sorting, the pressure of being Harry Potter’s son, quidditch class, portions and a whole bunch of other things I will not spoil.
AND THEN IT JUST FELL FLAT.
This wasn’t a JK Rowling written story, but fanfiction. Some dark magic, Harry’s scar hurting, some parenting troubles and a whole big mess that was just. Just. DISSAPOINTINGG.
Please excuse me while I go cry at having used ‘disappointing’ to describe a Harry Potter Book, and one that I’d been dying for.
Not spoiling anything, but seriously, THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER PLOT, OKAY? One that DID NOT INVOLVE TIME TURNERS.
3 starts because it is a crime to give a Harry Potter less than that.
