Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal Paperback edition by Adrian Alphona
I read a lot of comics when I was younger and then fell out of it, never really liking the whole 'grimdark' thing that took it over - as a woman, I also didn't really like the way that female characters were portrayed and/or killed and maimed to serve as motivators for male character's actions. It's taken a long time, as a result, for me to get back into comics again and it's series like 'Ms Marvel' that have helped me do that - rather than a tired re-tread of pasty white teenage boy fantasy, 'Ms Marvel' is about those who are 'other' in different ways *before* they become superheroes. Kamala is a true character of our time, trying to balance the demands of family, religion and culture with her desire to keep her friends and city safe with her new-found powers. I love this series, with volumes 2 and 3 carrying on the quality in both writing and artwork and look forward to reading the further adventures of Kamala Khan for some time to come!
Willow Wilson began her writing career at the age of 17, when she freelanced as a music and DJ critic for Boston's Weekly Dig magazine. Since then, she's written the Eisner Award-nominated comic book series Air and Mystic: The Tenth Apprentice and the graphic novel Cairo. Her first novel, Alif the Unseen, was a New York Times Notable book. It was shortlisted for the 2012 Flaherty-Dunnan Award. G. Willow spent her early and mid twenties living in Egypt and working as a journalist. Her articles about the Middle East and modern Islam have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic Monthly and the Canada National Post. Her memoir about life in Egypt during the waning years of the Mubarak regime, The Butterfly Mosque, was named a Seattle Times Best Book of 2010.
Willow is published by Grove/Atlantic Books in the United States and Atlantic UK in the United Kingdom.
Look out world, Kamala Khan is officially an Avenger! But will being one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes be everything she imagined? Or is life as a celebrity harder than she thought? But while saving the world is important, Jersey City still needs its protector too. A development company that co-opted Ms. Marvel's face might well have more in mind for gentrification than just real estate. Can Kamala...
