This volume brings together poems from six collections originally published between 1990 and 2011. I have divided the selection into five sections that correspond, broadly, to the separate stages in which they were written. The final and briefest one includes five fragments from Perros en la playa [Dogs on the Beach], a miscellany of prose, poetry and aphorisms that I published in early 2011. In my opinion, a Selected should not solely contain poems that have been often anthologised or singled out for praise by critics and readers. It should give a more or less accurate view of the variety and development of one's output over the years. Therefore, I have not shied away from including some youthful pieces or the odd experiment-not to mention poems for which one feels an immoderate fondness, which no amount of critical scrutiny can ever hope to dispel. (Jordi Doce)
Jordi Doce (1967) holds a BA in English Literature and wrote a M. Phil Thesis on the work of English poet Peter Redgrove. He worked as Language Assistant at the University of Sheffield (1993-1996) and The University of Oxford (1997-2000). He has translated the poetry of W.H. Auden, John Burnside, Anne Carson, T.S. Eliot, Charles Simic and Charles Tomlinson, among others, and has published five volumes of his own poetry: Dialogo en la sombra (1997), Leccion de permanencia (Pre-Textos, 2000), Otras lunas (DVD Ediciones, 2002), Gran angular (DVD Ediciones, 2005) and, most recently, No estabamos alli (Pre-Textos, 2016), which was picked as the Best Poetry Book of 2016 by the literary weekly El Cultural. He is the author of two books of aphorisms (Hormigas blancas, 2005 and Perros en la playa, 2011) and two book-length essays on the influence of English Romanticism on modern Spanish poetry (Iman y desafio, Peninsula, 2005) and the work of T.S. Eliot and W.H Auden (La ciudad consciente, Vaso Roto, 2010). Currently he lives in Madrid, where he works as freelance editor and translator.
