What a gem :)
I must admit that I probably wouldn't have read this had I not known the author. I read a lot, but it usually always comes from a narrow choice of themes/genres; the synopsis of Sleeping Through War doesn't fit my usual comfort zone and under normal circumstances I would probably have put it back on the shelf and not given it a second thought. But, having known the author for a number of years, I felt almost duty bound to give it a go...and I'm so glad I did. Not only is it utterly superb (the idea, the characters, the story lines, her writing craft itself) but it opened my eyes to my own blinkered view of literary fiction and made me question it. From now on I'm stepping out of my comfort zone more often in the hope that I've missed - and are therefore able to discover - many more gems such as this. The only problem I can forsee is that the author has set herself a pretty high benchmark with this, her debut novel. Surpassing it won't be easy!
