Reading this book was like coming home. I was great to be back in the Tortall-universe once again and read Tamora Pierce’s writing. I loved every word of it. She manages well to introduce characters we think we already know from earlier books from a new angle, making them likeable (mostly). However, was a bit confused at first because there is no showdown at the end of the book, no really high-stakes dramatic climax. Instead, in this book we get to know all the characters and see there development as well as learn a lot about magic and a little about religion in the universe (also, there are so many nods and references to other books - Arram reads a book by Farmer Cooper!). I see many people missing th eaction. I feel this is all built up for the next book which surely will be full of drama and action - after all, we know what will happen (in a way). Therefore, I was not disappointed but would not recommend this book for someone thinking about starting with the Tortall universe. I feel you would miss out.
