Offred's only function as a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead is to breed. Unable to choose or decide anything for herself, any form of rebellion or dissent will be punished by death. But even the repressive state of Gilead cannot totally obliterate desire - not Offred's, and not that of the two men on which her future hangs.
The Handmaid's Tale Paperback edition by Margaret Atwood
This, I am ashamed to admit, was my first Margaret Atwood, and I only read it because Jenny Rowbory recommended it, and she is ALWAYS right. And boy, was she right with this. A dystopian novel about a world in which women are subjugated, it was a fascinating, breathless read. It is both literary and very readable, which is a sign of truly good literature. Highly recommended.
Some books are classics for a reason and this is one of them. It can be a hard read - not because it's particularly graphic - but because its themes are shockingly current and thought provoking. The first person narrative is gripping and this dystopian novel is extremely engaging and has some wonderfully written lines, that pack a great punch and manage to say a lot in just a few words. An excellent book all together.
Margaret Atwood is Canada's most eminent novelist, poet and critic. Her books include The Edible Woman, Surfacing, Lady Oracle, Life Before Man, Bodily Harm, The Handmaid's Tale (winner of both the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Science Fiction and the Governor-General's Award, shortlisted for the Booker Prize and made in a major film). Cat's Eye (also shortlisted for the Booker Prize) The Robber Bride and Alias Grace. Finally, The Blind Assassin won the Booker Prize in 2000.
