A riview by Jean Lopez - Author of Historical Fiction.
The Idealist is a novel of fiction based on fact.
Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera founded the Falange, a fascist political party, shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. This was the cue for street brawling to begin between the youth of the right and the youth of the left.
A brilliant, charming young man, Jose Antonio was admired by friends and enemies alike, he was also much sort after by the giddy fashionable ladies of Madrid.
He was however, subject to contradictions in as much as while declaring his adherence to fascism, his policies leaned toward the left. And it was his friend, a British correspondent, who did her best to persuade him that his notion of grabbing power in a bloodless coup would lead to disaster.
The Idealist is a compelling read. Deep emotion and tension are maintained throughout.
