The King of Space Paperback edition by Jonny Duddle
My children (aged 3 and 5) love most of Jonny Duddle's books. They love, for instance, listening to the book 'Pirates next door', I love reading it and they're even quoting phrases from it by heart. However, this book 'The King of Space' by the same author has left us all totally confused and bewildered. We had to stop several times throughout to explain the story or at least to try and make sense of what we were guessing the plot might be. I don't mind authors making up words (Roald Dahl being the most famous example of how hilarious this can be), but if the story, the words and the pictures together become so 'innovative' that it's hard to follow, then I think it might have gone a bit too far. Maybe it's better suited for older children? We're definitely going to stick to the Gigantosaurus book or to Matilda and her pirate friend, who lived next door for another while...
Jonny Duddle overheard the story of his first book The Pirate Cruncher while sailing on a square-rigger. Since then he has written even stranger tales including The Pirates of Scurvy Sands, The Pirates Next Door, Gigantosaurus and The King of Space. The Pirates Next Door won the Waterstones Prize in 2012 and was shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. Now in danger of becoming a landlubber, Jonny lives in Wales with his wife, Jane, and their daughters, Daisy and Rosie.
An old pirate tells a tavern full of salty sea dogs about an island bursting with hidden treasure. Once they've set sail for the mysterious island, he tells them it is guarded by the terrible Pirate-Cruncher. Eventually their greed overcomes their fear and, when they arrive on the island a hilarious fold-down flap shows that the island itself is the Pirate-Cruncher, who promptly swallows the whole...
All young dinosaurs are warned about the scary Gigantosaurus. So Bonehead volunteers to be the dino-kids lookout whenever they go into the jungle to play. Unfortunately, he is the original boy-dinosaur who cried wolf, or in this case, GIGANTOSAURUS! Finally, Bonehead's friends refuse to believe his warnings and the Gigantosaurus really turns up! In a vertical gatefold surprise, it looks like...
