The Bookish Baker
This has got to be at least my third time reading The Selection and I have the weirdest relationship with this book/series. Its like my guilty pleasure. I read it every time I feel like I’ve gotten into a reading slump. I can seriously read one of the books in the series in less than a day.
First off I just love the cover. I think that they just really fit the story so well! I really love the details in the cover. The ruffles on the dress and the mirror like reflection in the background really make the design pop! Also the color is just perfect! Its one of my favorites ever!
This is definitely a very quick read. I can fly through it in a couple of hours if I really try. I really recommend it for anyone who is in a bit of a slump or is just getting into sort of fantasy books.
I do sort of hate the tropeness of the plot and the fact that there is yet another book with a love triangle. This book sort of takes some ideas from other books and a couple new ideas and smashes them together. I also really wished the world was more developed. We only get to see the tiniest chunk and the ever so little bit of history. This was such an interesting world and I wished that it was developed more. I know this is only the first book but I feel like there was so much more that could have been done in this one! Quite honestly, America Singer is probably one of the most annoying characters I have ever read. Like come on girl. She is so inconsistent in her thoughts and actions it just kills me. Most of the other characters are just undeveloped. We literally know absolutely nothing about them.
I just felt like I couldn’t connect with the characters as much as I like to. We didn’t know much about anyone’s history and I didn’t really feel with them. The most I felt was annoyance that they seem so flat. They are just superficial.
I have a love hate relationship with this series. I just can’t decide how I feel about it. Keep an eye out for more slightly ranting reviews on the rest of the series.
